Reconnection & Design Study
The Revive35 planning process will examine opportunities to improve mobility along the U.S. 35 corridor, providing the City and its project partners with a blueprint to improve traffic flow and multi-modal accessibility, strengthen connections between neighborhoods on both sides of the highway, support economic development, enhance quality of life, honor the history of communities impacted by the original highway design, and address public health and environmental considerations.
U.S. 35 serves as the primary east-west corridor through the City of Dayton. Designed with the intention to get vehicular traffic efficiently between destinations, the highway ultimately created a physical, visual and social divide. Over time, the highway has contributed to disinvestment in surrounding neighborhoods and has resulted in a lack of safe pedestrian and bicycle accessibility and diminished quality of life.
In recent years Dayton has advanced a range of projects aimed at revitalizing downtown and supporting neighboring areas. Revive35 will continue to progress the City’s efforts to create a safe, welcoming and inviting corridor that connects, rather than divides, City neighborhoods, community assets and destinations. Revive35 is a community-driven planning initiative that will explore the future of the U.S. 35 corridor – between S. Gettysburg Avenue and Steve Whalen Boulevard. The planning and design study will assess and identify opportunities to improve connectivity, safety, mobility, and economic opportunity for residents and businesses.
The initiative is supported by a $2 million federal grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation's Reconnecting Communities program. The funding will allow the City to conduct a comprehensive study of the corridor, facilitate a range of community conversations to gather local ideas and perspectives, and develop recommendations for how U.S. 35 can better serve Dayton's neighborhoods and future growth.
